Dress Codes and School

How students dress affects attitude.

Sep 12, 2006 Barbara Pytel

What if students were allowed to wear anything they wanted to school? Are the dress code regulations necessary?

Dress Restrictions

Most schools have regulations on how students dress. The intent is to keep students safe and focused on academics. Teachers have enough on their plate to motivate learning without having to monitor which slogan is affecting who today.

Baggy pants and bandanas could be interpreted as gang dress. Dressing as a gang member intimidates other students and spreads fear instead of focusing on academics. Pants with large pockets are often restricted because a weapon or drugs could be carried in them. Certain colors are often banned if gang colors.

Coats and bookbags are often only permitted in lockers. Again, guns and drugs could be in coat pockets and bookbags.

X-Rated

Dressing seductively is a great distraction to the opposite sex. It only makes sense to put restrictions on what can be worn to school. Sexual thoughts are already frequent in middle school and high school. Most students do not need visual aids. The imagination is active enough. Schools have banned MySpace.com during school hours because of the suggestive content and predators lurking. MySpace has tried to make the site safer but students still make themselves vulnerable by being on MySpace.

T-Shirts

Clothing with reference to cigarettes or alcohol are usually not allowed. Television restricts commercials on these subjects so it doesn't make sense to allow students advertise in school. T-shirts from Hooters are usually not permitted because of the reference made to waitresses. But a new craze is emerging and it is not making administration and law enforcement very happy. The t-shirts say "Don't Snitch."

This latest trend tells students at school to not cooperate with teachers, principals and police. So, you witness vicious harassment--don't snitch. You witness a gun in a locker--don't snitch. You see drugs in the lunchroom--don't snitch. You overhear someone talking about a bomb--don't snitch.

Only Wrong If Caught

This new craze in t-shirts leads already confused middle school and high school students to believe that they must stand behind their friends at all costs. Doesn't really matter if it is morally wrong. You stand by your friends even if they could blow up the school, shoot your friends, or die of a drug overdose. The worst thing you can be is a snitch and cooperate with the police. Police rely on citizens to assist them in investigations. No leads, no arrests, less safety.

The Damage Has Been Done

Even though these t-shirts are no longer being produced, other companies have copied the slogan and sell on the black market as knock offs. But, more and more schools are saying "no" to these slogan t-shirts.

Uniforms

More and more public schools are switching to uniforms. This custom used to be reserved for private and Catholic schools but public schools are finding some positive results. When students wear uniforms to school, no one can tell who has more money. The latest expensive jeans can't be shown off along with the designer polo.

The results have been better attendance because students always have something acceptable to wear. Studies uncovered the fact that some students were missing school because they didn't have "cool" clothes to wear or the one pair of jeans that was "cool" was too wet to wear to school. And, since students are not distracted by who is wearing what, students focus better on academics and their own business.

How we dress does matter. Even entrepreneurs that work out of their home feel their workday is more productive when dressed appropriately rather than working in pajamas.

How we dress does affect our performance.

Students should dress respectfully in school. They should be allowed to wear what they want, but to a certain extent. Students should not be allowed to wear mini skirts or wear their pants around their knees. Those looks are sloppy and do not show self respect or self confidence. Also, no business wants to hire a man who wears his pants down to his knees and shirts 4 sizes too big. That is not a presentable look. If you want a good job, then you need to dress properly, it shows self respect. There's many reasons to why schools have dress codes, its not to "hinder our individuality" its to promote a better life style and self confidence. No one is taking away anyone's "free spirit" or "freedom". If you want a good education, and a well paying job, you need to dress for it. School is merely preparing you for the future. Whether you choose to take that opportunity or not is your choice.

Judging from the poor spelling and grammer from students that oppose a dress code, there could be a benefit to wearing uniforms so students could spend less time looking at their attire and more time learning spelling and grammar.

Look, I'm thirteen, and quite possibly more intelligent than some of my teachers. I personally do not feel that inhibiting a students right to express themselves is a good way to do anything but save up their emotions for an "explosion" which would be prevented by allowing them to wear what they choose. This is a stupid, pointless, authoritarian approach to prevent violence which could be prevented just as well by an intelligent policy on the part of the school which does not involve destroying our nation's constitution!

I go to a public uniform school, and have for the past 2 years. I went to public schools that didn't have uniforms and, mainly for grade 7/8 you could tell that people were treated differently depending on what they wear, if you didn't wear American Eagle or whatever then you were treated badly/ignored, and the people who did were treated better by other students.
But at the school I go to now where we have a uniform people are treated ruffly the same, although people are still treated differently if they wear name brands (they break uniform policy).

I think uniforms are a good idea (to an extent) but I think students should have the right to be creative with them, for example get to dye them, cut them....., that way students are more creative and can express themselves with that they wear without having the set back of students having expensive name brands that not all students can afford.

My school use to allow that before we changed principals and it worked out well and most people were in uniform and were able to express themselves, now the new principal is trying to crack down on the uniform with not allowing people to be creative with the uniforms so more people are out of uniform trying to be creative with non-school clothes while at the same time are bringing back the name brands that the schools uniform is suppose to stop.

And the other problem with uniforms are that students hate having to change out of them after school since everyone hates them, so some people choose not to wear uniform pants and have a school shirt covering their non-school shirt so they can be out of uniform after school, while others bring non-school clothes to school so they can change in the bathrooms after school, and sometimes even at lunch if they really feel like it, or change into uniform when they get to school. This makes the students late for class which interrupts their, and the other students learning.

So there are two sides to the subject.

and they people who commented on May 1st and 2nd really need to learn not to use msn talk all the time.

students should be allowed to dress freely.how we dress is sometimes a way to xpress our feelings and it's a mark of who we are...so stay what you are and dress as you like but remember that the dress you choose looks good in you and it fitted you as what you really are. uniforms are fine but sometimes it looks like you cannot differentiate one from the other.

I find it unacceptable to dictate to children what colors to like and what colors not to. I am opting out of the dress code. My son is going to kindergarden and i will not dress him in blue and khaki for the rest of his life. He likes green and orange and blue and red. He has not worn any clothes besides GAP or children's place. It does not matter where you buy clothes however how sensibly you dress. I understand no slogans or baggy jeans or ripped jeans or belly shirts.... But come on limiting clothes to 3 colors? What is this? a military? I am social worker and i am struggling with this whole issue as i dont want my son to be excluded or picked on however it is against my liberties and beliefs and freedom of choice! Anyone has any suggestions? I am looking for the department of education state law regarding dress code however i can not find it. Help anyone!!!

I go to a catholic high school and we already have to wear uniforms, which i am fine with. Although recently at the start o fthe school year they decided that they were going to take our uniforms to the next absurd level and make every single student (male or female) tuck in their polo shirts! Mind you, the lady's skirts are already up to the bust line in some cases, so you can only imagine how ridiculous we all look. I am rebelling and making a petition to fight this illogical rule

I am in a public highschool without uniforms. Some of the girls that go to my school try to show off their bodies and wear really tight clothes or short shorts. I don't understand why someone would want everyone to be staring at them all the time. I hate it when people stare at me!

And the guys that go to my school are even worse, not by how they dress but by how the want to girls to dress. All teenage boys can think about it sex and it shows at my school. You cant walk around a corner without seeing at least one "couple", if thats what you want to call them, all over eachother liplocked and all touchy-feely. Its a bit ridiculous.

I am in a debate class and my team got assigned the dress code for our debate. i honestly think that we should switch to uniforms because then you wouldnt have to see everyones bodies all the time, and im not saying that it would change anything about the whole making out thing, but it would be a lot less destracting. What i do think we should do to the uniforms though is have rules about how we can wear them but still have a little freedom to what they look like to still be able to stand out and be and individual but not to the point to be showing off either.

ok. well i personally dont like uniforms, although they have both a positive and negative outcome. uniforms help keep schools organized but they also take away a persons right to express themselves. students should be thought what they are expected to be like and if they dont behave accordently then hey should receive a cnsequence. and all of you out there that just dont like uniforms bcause they are tcky and all of that should look at the bright side. there probably most likely and proven yes in the past to when i useed to go to a uniformed school it maintains a school safer and more under controlled then if there are no unifrms. majority of ppl dont like them myself included but he you like by the rules here and you cant change them. sry to burst your bubble but its all true.

I am a person who believes that we, as students, should be able to wear nearly anything that we want, but I think that there should be a slight restriction. High school is not preparing us for jobs; high school is a preparation for furthering our education. If high school was to prepare us for jobs, then we would not be taking classes like World History, American History, Chemistry, Biology, etc. There is not an application for any of those types of subjects in jobs that you can acquire right out of high school. Anyway, it appears to me that most of the writers (of these posts) need to actually pay attention in their English classes, because your English class is an important job, even if you end up working at McDonald's. I mean, personally, I can not tolerate people who have horrible vernacular, such as "we shuld b abl 2 wear wut we wunt 2 cuz it is only fare". What does that mean? Truly, I'm appalled.

O.K., maybe students shouldn't be told what to wear, but they should be taught how to spell...
It's apparent that your need to be able to dress in order to express your inner feelings is interfering with your ability to learn.

I've read some comments down below and I must say that people's writing habits are terrible these days. Anyhow, students should wear school uniforms. It makes a parents life a lot easier as well as a school faculty member. If students wear the exact same clothing, then there will be less misbehavior, violence, and more academic focus.

I'm writing a paper for my Enlish class about school dress codes, but I'm not very sure about exactly where I stand right now. I don't know if I think shool uniforms would be a good idea for my school or a terrible one. At my school the whole dress code thing is getting so rediculuos, even some of the teachers don't follow the rules and they continue to send kids to the office for dressing inapproprietly when they should really be going down to the office with them.

~help me choose a side please!! Uniforms or a rediculous dress code?!

As I sit here reading this I'm in a uniform. I am a Freshman in college that just skipped her senior year, and I must admit that I like the idea of uniforms. I have never gone to a school where uniforms were held, but I personally like this idea. I'm joining the military, and for my ROTC class here I have to wear my combat uniform all day every thursday. I personally believe that I do better on those days because I feel better about myself. We will always have those who rebel, but at the same time we can't change it. Uniforms don't solve all problems, and I agree that people should be able to be creative in them, but at the same time I agree with them. In many professional businesses you would not be able to wear a lot of what the kids do these days. My mother for instance can not wear jeans or anything of the sort. She's in slacks and a dress shirt every day because of her work policy. My major here in college is elementary education, and my minor is Military. Granted the military uniform is very strict, like we can not have strings hanging, we can not wear nail polish, makeup, earings, or any ring besides a wedding band or a military academy class ring, and we have to have our hair off our collar, but I never said we had to have school uniforms that strict. Heck, if I had been forced to keep these uniform standards all through school I would be so frustrated it's not funny, but some kind of uniform should be used.

I can't believe the level of entitlement that is displayed on this site from students! School is a place to learn, grow hopefully give you tools to have a successful future. While some will go on to future education, many in America will not. Students need to be prepared when they leave high school to enter the working world, which includes having and understanding of appropriate society standards including those toward dress.

School is not an appropriate venue to express oneself based on their clothing; you should be using your mind and your voice to appropriately express your thoughts, questions and opinions. Uniforms and dress codes are a part of life. I can't think of one job that doesn't have some sort of restrictions or rules that pertain to dress. What are we teaching our children and students if they are already acting like this when it comes to following simple rules at school? How are we preparing them to become successful members of the working world? Are they going to tell their boss they can't wear the uniform or follow the dress code because it doesn't allow them to "express their creativity"?

I am horrified by the comment left on September 4th, where the student said at their school they were "take(ing) our uniforms to the next absurd level and make every single student (male or female) tuck in their polo shirts!" Seriously? In what world does this person live? Walk into a business and see how many working adults have their shirt untucked.

I don't understand why every student (and their parents) feel the need and the right to buck school rules. Especially the rules put in place to benefit the majority of the entire student body. I wonder what will happen to those in the future that always believe rules should be bent for them? What will happen to our society and our country?

Just in case you were wondering... I am 25. I think I am too young to feel the world has changed so much since I was in school but it apparently has.

You make a very good point. The real world has dress codes. Enter a bank and the men are in suits and the tellers are also in suits or some other form of semi-formal wear. Grocery store? Dress code. Fine restrautant? Servers wear uniforms. Hospital? Uniforms. Medical clinic? Uniforms. McDonald's? Uniforms. Teachers have a dress code. Insurance companies? Dress code. Court of law? Codes for dress. Car dealerships? Dress codes. Most positions in the adult world include dress codes for proper image. While rebellion is expected, there is a reason for dress codes. And if you think about it, our dress codes are quite lenient. Check out the dress codes for men and women in Arab nations.

I began reading this site for a reference on a research report for my dual credit English IV class. As I read responses, I wanted to give my own:

I do not agree with full flegded uniforms. Yes, some kids get picked on for the clothes they wear, but alot of it has to do with the way the child carries themself. It's more about confidence than clothing.

When we're at school, we are there because the government requires it, not to be paid. I have worked at a nursing home and was okay with the dress code simply because I was being paid. When I get a job and am being paid with more than just a future that I can acquire anyways, then I will be more accepting of a dress code.

I have spent the first two years of highschool with out a major dress code, and the past two years of highschool, we were given a stricter dress code. I was one of the first to protest at no avenge. Our dress code is not the worst but it causes me the opposite reaction than it is supposed to be intended to do.

I am one of those girls who would prefer to be in jeans and a t-shirt. The clothes that we are enforced to where are not what I would normally wear and I won't wear them outside school which makes me have to buy double the amount of clothes. Also since I am uncomfortable in them, my focus is more on what I'm wearing and how it makes me feel, which is like yet another blob walking around in the controlled hallways. I become much less confident and so uncomfortable that I, even being an A+ student, have great difficulty focusing alot of the time. It becomes more of a struggle.

I do like being able to express myself by wearing what I am comfortable wearing. I like being different and feeling like I can make my own choices without having them dictated to me. But since our dress code was enforced two years ago, I have found other ways to express myself and feel like I'm not just another statistic for the school.

If the decision were up to me, which I know it's not considering the fact that I'm not one of the braniacs in office needing to find some rules to make up, I would enforce a dress code which expresses some freedom for individuality as well as modesty. There is a middle. You don't have to go to an extreme of one way or the other.

Our clothes have nothing to do with our learning. It's your confidence that does. And you get your confidence from how you feel whether it be your clothes being comfortable or expressing who you are.

I think it is easier for everyone in the morning and students can sleep longer having a dress code.It can too keep kids out of trouble and bullying and make kids more safe at school.I don't think anyone would want their child getting beat up at school for what they wear.I Have to wear a uniform and its just one collared shirt or sweatshirt with our school logo on it.Its a lot easier for me and for my friends. Its alot easier then picking out something to wear every morning.ITS NO BIG DEAL i like it !!!!!

To all these arguements saying that students cannot express themselves while in uniforms, I'd like to point something out. Your personality comes out no matter what you're wearing. When students are wearing the same clothes, they express themselves in less superficial ways. I went to a high school with a dress code and instead of seeing elaborate clothing, you'd look around and find people who played instruments, people who would draw and paint, and have amazing talents. People were acknowledged by who they were, not what they wore. Clothing is not the only form of self expression, and students are still free to dress how they want outside of school, and after they graduate. This is really not such a big deal.

For one notice how all of you who post that there should be no dress code either use slang words or misspelled a lot of words. Secondly, i am a 14 year old girl who does not necesarily want uniforms but at least dress code. people say that casual dress "expresses your individuality", however, it does not. Casual dress only places you into gruops by your clothing because of how much its costs or how coture it is. Your apparel gives you status not and expression of your individuality. -KC.

Alright. I dont think that dress codes are necessarily bad, but i dont understand why people cannot wear Holey Jeans in a lot of schools. All the schools are worried about are "sexual" things. But in reality, if they were smart enough to give the kids credit, they would know that nobody is going to get fingered or anything at school. we're smarter than that. THE IDEA HERE IS WAY TO BIASED. THE AUTHOR SHOULD'VE THOUGHT ABOUT THE STUDENTS WHO JUST WANT TO WEAR WHAT THEY WANT CAUSE THEY WOULD FEEL ALOT MORE COMFORTABLE THAT WAY. I FOR ONE DON'T CARE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE CAUSE IT'S NOT IMPORTANT TO ME AND IT DOESN'T AFFECT ME IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM. THEN AGAIN THERE ARE STUDENTS THAT DON'T CARE MUCH FOR IT EITHER WAY. THE FACT THAT THERE ARE UNIFORMS MAKES EVERYONE THE SAME. I DON'T LIKE BEING LIKE OTHER PEOPLE. I'M MY OWN PERSON AND IN THE END THATS ALL THAT MATTERS. TEACHERS ARE ALWAYS SAYING BE DIFFERENT. WELL I HAVE ONE QUESTION FOR ALL THE TEACHERS OUT THERE THAT TELL THEIR STUDENTS THAT, HOW DO YOU EXPECT US TO BE DIFFERENT IF WE ALL LOOK A LIKE? SCHOOLS SHOULD BE FLEXIBLE, WE AS ADOLESCENCE'S TEND TO BE HARD-HEADED AND I ADMIT I CAN BE STUBBORN SOMETIMES. SOMETIMES WE DON'T FEEL LIKE FOLLOWING IT BECAUSE WE DON'T THINK ITS FAIR. SO MAYBE HAVE YOUR INSIPID RULES BUT LET US HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FREEDOM ON WHAT WE WEAR.

It is very important to change the NAMS dress code, for many different reasons. First, people at Forest Grove High School (FGHS) are aloud to do wear hats and other things that currently violate our dress code, and they are in the top one percent of schools in the country, and there may be a connection. Also, some teachers think that hoods and hats are disrespectful, but it’s not, and if the dress code were changed things inappropriate and illegal still would not be aloud. It could make people feel better about their appearance, thus lowering their social stress so they can focus more on schoolwork. Again, it is unfair that FGHS has a dress code with more variety than Neil Armstrong Middle School’s (NAMS).
The students at FGHS are aloud to wear hats, short skirts, lower cut shirts, hoods, and slippers. It is extremely unfair that people one grade ahead of us have such a different dress code. There is some clothing that does promote gangs, but it is also unfair hat just because a few people are in a gang that wears the color red, that the whole school can’t wear anything red. But of course, FGHS can. I never said that there wouldn’t still be limits on the types and styles of clothes that students wear.
There are several things that teachers at NAMS consider disrespectful about the way we dress. For example the think that hoods and hats are disrespectful and distracting. They do not distract people at all, and there is no way that hats are disrespectful. Also, about the dress code, there would still be limits on what people can wear! People would be aloud to wear very low cut shirts, or super baggy pants, or hoods that cover people’s eyes, which are the real problem anyway.
Most importantly, if people have the freedom to wear whatever they want, it could dramatically increase their mood. They will think they look better, boosting their self esteem, helping them focus on school work rather than how they look. Also, people with a high self esteem have a lower chance of doing drugs, committing suicide, and of course failing school. They will also get better grades, increasing test scores, and giving them a better future.
In conclusion changing the dress code just a bit can have a dramatic effect on students. Lots of things can go right, and nothing can go wrong. Changing the dress code is just yet another way to increase test scores, and give people better grades. And if people do wear gang related color

I think there should be dress codes because if kids would dresslike they wanted, there would be some pretty bad things ou there. Even though uniforms stink, they keep order and help attain academic excellence.

Well, first of all, I am a high school junior and I just happen to be writing a paper for my English class. I am exposing the advantages and the horrible disadvantages of dress codes. Before I mention the pro's and con's of both, I would like to say that my school doesn't have a dress code and we're an accredited high school. We're known for our academics, sports, marching band, AND chorus. So, the dress code has nothing to do with academic performance. Now for the pro's and con's. Some cons's include not being able to express yourself in a way that's different than everyone else and not being able to be an individual. Some pro's include preventing jealously, envy, and wearing a uniform eliminates the chance of a person being robbed or attacked for wearing something that others want.

Lastly, I would like to point out that everyone that criticized people made mistakes in their comments, too. So, before you go judging others, how about you review yours for mistakes? Nobody's perfect.

You are already in a high achieving school. Many of the schools that are adopting a dress code or uniforms are in low achieving schools. Not all schools are the same.

Hi, i'm a student and i think that its best for children to wear uniforms to school.
The reason why is because some students get picked on and that's unfair for a child to get bullied for what there wearing.
That's why i believe that students should wear uniforms to school.
AND THAT'S FINAL!!

I think that all schools in the United States should wear what they want to wear.
Even though sometimes it can be seductive and can affect the other gender,
doesn't mean that there has to be a dress code. And students should be able
to wear cloths that either are not to revealant,or to offensive. That's just my oppinion.
It doesn't have to be different though. Also I also think they shouldn't be able to
come to school in nudity, or in boxers (or any other undergarments).

The topic of school uniforms has been debated over and over again. I have seen both sides of the argument and my opinion stands firm. School is a place of learning, growth, and development. While kids may may feel that their freedom of expression has been stripped from them, a school uniform/ dress code is a positive, and professional way to bring about change in the school system.
Students need to learn responsibility and professionalism in high school before entering the career world. A note to all of you parents out there that oppose a dress code for your "Little Billy": An adolecent wearing a tattered pair of blue jeans, with a chain hanging off of them, boxers exposed, and a T-Shirt two sizes to large promoting a certain illicit substance, has about as much chance getting a job as an accorn. The unemployment rate is rising, more specialized jobs are being deported to the middle east, and where do you think those thousands of layed of employees are going to look for work? They will take the lower paying jobs having no other choice, and your "Little Billy" will be turned away before he even asks for an appilcation.
The way you present yourself has a huge impact on whether or not your a going to be selected for a job or not. Thus the school uniforms would prepare a student for his coming life ahead.
And as far as "not being able to express yourself", if the only way you can express yourself is through what you wear then you obviously need a tune up on your personality. What if a person is poor, and they are unable to afford decent clothing, should they be subject to ridicule of the more fortunate? A school uniform would help preserve traditional values by instead of judging someone on their apparel, judging the them on the extent of their personality and character that truely shapes who they are.

i go to a school that has a dress code and i love it
we get outta uniform days, which are awesome but on those days i spend so much time picking out what to wear i couldnt imagine doing that everyday
people at my school still have a since of creativity within our dress code
we are allowed to wear whatever hoodie's we want so that is who u are
so i am all for dress code/uniforms..and they can be cute

I never thought that dress was so important. I am a middle school teacher and I have a few students who come to school wearing clothing that looks like gang wear. I've noticed that they don't take school seriously. They don't seem focused and their work is barely acceptable. I've spoken to the parents. Now I think I might take the next step which is to tell the parents that restricting the type of clothing their child wears might help. I know the kids will sneak the offending clothing in their backpack and then make a quick change when they get to school. But if the parents are diligent about setting these boundaries, they can help make a difference.

whoa students should just be allowed to wear whatever kind of clothes they want to wear because it makes them express how they're feeling.. i mean people see what teachers think is not right for school... but then if a kid wears whatever they feel like it makes the teacher look bad because most should understand what kids are going through and should just let them wear whatever.. its not that bad.... i think they should just ban all the rules saying everything is bad for school when it really isn't.. the teachers make it sound bad, but truely its not..

Clothes don't make the character. Or the school, for that matter. You can dress up 100o poor kids that come from the bad side of town at my school, but it doesn't mean that they're going to be good or care. Amazingly, no one at my school picks on you because of what you wear. It's very... clique-y. But girls still DO where suggestive outfits, boys still DO wear the giant baggy pants, and gang activity, beatings, drugs, and, yes, sex are found in the halls (or the bathrooms). I don't think that changing what they wear will make them any different. They probably wouldn't even wear a uniform anyway. They don't even obey the dress code now, and they get away with it.
I think that being able to express one's creative freedom while not causing a distraction to others should be allowed. I wouldn't even mind uniforms if we could alter them and wear them as we want to. It's not fair to some students who are poor to buy expensive uniforms (my friend, who goes to a private school, says her uniforms were $400!!!) when they don't even particularly like them. Uniforms may discourage ethnic diversity and squash students' personalities and individualities.
While I do agree on some terms at my school, like non-mini skirts, I do think that we should be allowed to wear whatever we want without becoming to inappropriate for school. If your parents grew up in the 60s, they could tell you how there was no dress code and they wore micro minis, hot pants, and bell bottoms without getting suspended! No wonder the 60s were so colorful!
I do agree with certain things, but simply installing uniforms in schools will not fix the problems. Sorry.

What's the point of expressing your style in school? We don't usually go to our jobs wearing something that expresses our style and/or personal feelings or beliefs. Do you or would you feel stifled by having to wear a uniform at work, or a suit or something? Does that take away one's self-confidence, self-worth? Maybe uniforms are not the answer, but perhaps a certain dress code should be put in place. Anyway, if you allow your clothes to dictate who you are, how much personal freedom do you really have?

I'm a freshmen in high school and no dress code is deffinatly one change I wish I didn't have to make. I hate walking up the staris and seeing other girls undrewear because there skirts are so short. Soffe or boody shorts that don't always cover there but. Also low cut shirts that causes you to see there boobs is rediculis. Because it makes them look like slutd, and not only dose it attract the cut guy in bio's attention but also the creepy teacher that hits on girls! Because you are attracting everyone's attetion you ar distracting everyone around you, and some of us what to go some where in life.
For guys nobody, and not even girls, and espcally not other guys, want to see your boxers hanging out; it's gross. Baggie jeans and oversized shirts make you look dum.
Now I'm not saying uniforms are exactly the answer, but atleast some form of guidelines are deffinatly needed.

i do agree it is kind of pointless, but it's all a question of discretion, if you personally believe its acceptable,
and are willing to give a convincing arguement over it. then go ahead. because NO MATTER what you make kids wear,
they're always going to find a way to push the limits of it. I personally know how to wear my clothes, (they fit)
and have no problems with a dress code being enforced.
but yet again, it's to what extent they enforce it.

Uniforms or not, students need to improve in their behavior or they will get uniforms. Can't say whose fault it is. But the bads outweigh the goods, or vise-versa(however it is). Don't want uniforms? Prove it that it's not needed. From what I've seen, uniforms seem like a good idea.

I'm doing an essay for my class and I remember being in the same situation as the students today and I still have the same beliefs. I don't think school uniforms should be enforced. Yes something should not be allowed because its not appropriate but a uniform for students today is blocking creativity. I beleive if the students want to have freedom of expression through how they dress, they should be able to have some courtesy know just what is not acceptable in a school setting. Both sides of this situation need to give a little or the same arguements are going to arise throughout the years.

For the most part, the comments here present good arguments for both sides. Some of the people who commented, for example, the first ones, really need to consider what they are trying to say. I did notice though, that the foremost and really only argument for the con side of this argument focuses on the dress code limiting student’s creativity and individualism. I’ll get to that argument later. One other argument that I saw was the cost of buying uniforms if a dress code was implemented. One commenter said that a friend’s uniforms were $400. Now I don’t know if this was just for one outfit, or all that would be needed for the school year, but I am assuming that when he says “my friend, who goes to a private school, says her uniforms were $400!!!” (-December 1st commenter) that he meant all of them, so I ask, is this a high price for all of the uniforms?
I don’t think so. Let’s see, I’ll calculate the lowest possible costs for a student’s yearly set of clothing. $25 each for 5 pairs of jeans for each day of the school week, (If you want to wear a different pair each day) adds up to $125. Ok, now the shirts. I’ll go $15 for each shirt. 5x15 equals $75. Now add this to $125 which equals $200. So that is half of the uniform bill. But I’m not done yet. The uniform must include socks, undershirts and shoes. So let’s add that to the tab also. $2 each for a pair of socks x 5 equals $10. We’re at $210 now. I’ll estimate undershirts now. About $10 each? Ok. 10 x 5 equals $50. Now the tab is $260. A nice pair of shoes could cost anywhere from $30 to $100. I’ll go with 20 bucks though. (These shoes wouldn’t last very long, but I am trying to show the cheapest possible amount for all of the clothing.) $280. This is the bare minimum. It includes jeans, shirts, undershirts, socks and shoes with no variety from week to week. This is about 3/4ths of the “super high” uniform bill. There are many more things that I could go into such as sweatshirts and jackets and belts and ties, which are on the most part included in the average uniform bill. I hope you get the gist of what I am saying now.
These prices aren’t that high if you think about it and once you pay it; you are set for the year. Do not think that uniforms are too pricey. If you shop around, I bet you could find a lot cheaper sets of uniforms. Also, in the years following the date the dress code policy is incorporated, people would be able to buy used uniforms for a fraction of the price. I will give one more example. What is one thing that almost everyone has? An iPod. Two iPods equal the price of the uniform bill. We have enough money to afford iPods but not a uniform bill. Hmm. These are all things to consider. I believe this covers the price argument related to dress codes. I will elaborate on the individualism problems many people think will be posed by dress codes in my next comment. Tell me what you think.

P.S. Oh, and if you didn’t figure it out, I am pro-uniform. :)

I think that the uniform policy is absurd. If thats the way I want to dress, then I will. Its the way teenagers grow up, they express themselves through clothing. I really dont get why some people dont understand that. I do, though, beleive in a dress code. I dont want to come to school and then look at the boys boxers that sits in front of me in my fourth period. Nor do I want to look at some girls chest! I think that the dress code in school is a good idea because the way we dress now will help us in the future. I think a dress code is needed at schools because if there was no dress code some people would dress very inappropriate for a learning zone and from that would lead to disrespect and bullying. I also think that a uniform policy is not the greatest idea because being teenagers we have to express ourselves. But studies have shown that students pay more attention to learning when a uniform policy is in effect than to what others are wearing when we dress all different.

I don't think we meed uniforms, I just think that we do need a dresscode. The girls I go to school with, they tend to wear things that show themselves off, and I don't think it is helpful to all the guys in my school. All my guy friends say that when a girl walks by with a tight shirt and tight pants, that they tend to stare at her. And when a girl with a loose shirt and loose jeans walks by that they just keep on walking. So I say yes to school dress codes. But NO to uniforms.

In my opinoion i think that dress codes shouldn't even had been invented. They say that we couldn't wear certain clothing because it's "gang afiliated" for example they do not let us where white t's because it's gang related. Truth is gang members wear any and all types of clothes. it doesn't matter what color they have on, they wear all kinds of colors. What the schools going to do then, make us go to school naked just becuase they saw a person on the street wearing certain clothing. So I think that the school districts are not really stoping any gang afiliations in school. They're just making it harder for us kids to express ourselves, our culture, amd what we believe in.

I have wore uniforms from 1st grade through 4th and two years in middle school, its only slightly different than regular clothes. Uniforms get boring real fast, so wearing something different is always better. Icould see if scholls were jobs or jail but its not. People say we wouldn't have to worry about having name brand clothes, well there are a lot more problems in school than that, and they are even bigger. Kids talk about you no matter what you are wearing.

First off, for all of you who are leaving comments in a non-professional manner and are unable to spell, you are not helping our case any. Abbreviations and misspelled words make it so people will not take you seriously. Second, with the case listed above under T-Shirts, "Clothing with reference to cigarettes or alcohol are usually not allowed. Television restricts commercials on these subjects so it doesn't make sense to allow students advertise in school." I for one, have seen many alchohol commercials on television and find no harm in it. When I see comments like one listed above "There's many reasons to why schools have dress codes, its not to "hinder our individuality" its to promote a better life style and self confidence. No one is taking away anyone's "free spirit" or "freedom". If you want a good education, and a well paying job, you need to dress for it." I always like to point out the wealthiest person in the world, Bill Gates. Bill Gates wears flip-flops, ratty shorts, and wierd T-Shirts from time to time and thats only in the office. But hey, you have to be dressed good to make the money.

It also shows that you need to learn how to spell for many of the guests commenting on this article. I agree with the article, I'm currently writing an issue paper for one of my classes about dress codes in school. This article posts some really good points. Who wants to see a girls thong sticking out of her pants or her in a super mini skirt. It just shows that you disrespect the school, teachers and other students. No teacher (male or female) wants to see your underwear, cleavage or anything else thats sexually related. Mo one says you have to dress the same. Usually when a school has uniforms, there are different choices you can choose from or you can use accessories to show your individualitly. You can also use your hairstyle and many other ways to express yourself. But you don't have to use vulgar slogans or show a bunch of skin to do so. You're at school to learn and get an education, not to be in a fashion show or to show off your new designer clothing, thats what the weekend is for.

I think that uniforms violate our rights. Some people have tattoos and nose rings for religious belifs and that shouldnt be tampered with. I have been studying the good and bad points of school uniforms for a month now for my junior project and I have come to find that not only is there more bad than good but some schools have taken this issue to extreme levels. For instance in Oklahoma a Muslim 6th grader was suspended twice for wearing her head scarf because it violated the dress code. Also on Aug. 27, 2009, more than 200 male students were forced to line up a cafateria and lift their shirths so that school officials could see if their pants were too low or if their underwear was showing. I have at least 30 more cases of extreame dress codes. After hearing these things I quickly came to the conclution that dress codes are just as "harmful" as free dress.

i agree with the april 30th all caps comment!!!!! how can you tell a person what they can and cant wear?? one of the main ways that a person expresses their thoughts and themselves is by the way that they dress. yall trying to take away another part of our freedom.

I personally believe that uniforms are not a good idea. It is more expensive to buy new uniforms and a new set of regular clothing with the economy the way it is now. You cannot express yourself and show how you feel because everyone is dressed the same. I understand the reasons why we do wear uniforms but I believe that we should be allowed to wear regular style clothing to a certain extent.

Dress codes are bad because it takes away from a person's freedom. I understand dress codes for adults because they want to look profesional but seriously.... school is a place to learn and if a kid sees only plad skirts and tan pants, they wont know what creativity is. If scientists all had the same ideas, we would be in the stone ages people!!! School is a place for kids!! Not ROBOTS!!!! School is not the U.S.A Army either!!!

students should be allowed to do whatever they feel like doing. if they want to dress like gangsters so what? if they want to play basketball let em play basketball. they should not have to sit in class with teachers who think they can tell them what to think. dress codes dont mean nothing. if one girl is so cute when she wears her high heels and mini skirt so what? or i saw that one with the pink, sparkly fairy princess dress was very cute! and the boys love it too. let kids be kids. teachers got better things to do. like TEACH so they can go to college and be ready for the real world. the kids dont be good looking when they wear school uniforms.

I love my high school uniform. It is very traditional and pretty on any girl. I am strongly agree with this article about how we dress has a great effect on our performance. Plus, I believe that the main purpose of going to school is learning to be better person and focus inside. I also think it is good to make everyone look the same and equally.

First off - 2 is not a word. To is. Plus, it doesn't hinder what you express for the fact that you all the in the same manner in the groups you hang out with. I can honestly say that I never seen a "prep" or "jock" wear something from Wal-Mart. I'm a girl myself, I don't understand why girls show theirselves off and yell at guys for looking. Plus, their not asking you to dress that way on weekends. They are preparing you for the buisness rule. As a student going to a school without uniforms, I've noticed that if you don't dressed nicely your called a "Dirty". That must be fun for them.

I just want to say this, my school was selected along with a couple other schools from New Hampshire to take the NEAP tests for the united states of america and these tests are so our leaders know what we are learning and what we are struggling in etc. and our school only has regualations on cloths so they are apropriate for our age.

Personally, guys who wear their pants below their butt need to think about what pants are really for and for all you big tough guys who think wearing wife beaters in public are cool and they show off your ripted muscles, get over yourself.
Sure, school is a place for learning but it is also one of the only (if not the only) places a huge group of girls and boys socialize together. I personally love hot girls and find them very atractive and thats just how nature goes. I am not saying that schools should be tolerent towards kissing, indecent body exposior or sexually related conduct but you also have to realize schools is about LEARNING even if it is about the oposite sex and i am sure that a lot of people that have responded to this article have taken sex-ed classes or health classes. I mean, things like these are going to occure ALWAYS and there is nothing any one can do to stop it so you people who are so caught up in trying to get kids to wear uniforms becuase you think it will stop kids from being actracted to one another so they will focus on school work, dont waste your time.

Well, as a teen i belive that what you wear makes you who you are. So YOu should be able to wear what you'd like. Others may be disgusted but what you wear is who you are. Guys who sag are fine with the way they wear their clothes. As long as you are not showing skin or nasty boxers. And girls can wear whatever they like. It's not anyones else's choice. And uniforms are fine to but only some of them.

I think that if there are uniforms, then we as students wont be able to express ourselves. My school has banned spikes and studds, and I get into trouble for wearing those. If it were a full uniform-I wouldn't be able to bear it. Our clothes are our personality. What we wear is what wear are. If there were uniforms thats just another thing taken away from us in our teenage years. I don't believe in uniforms.

I belive all schools should have some form of dress code. My school has a very relaxed dress code, no hats, no non-natural hair colers ( pink, lime green, blue, purple, ext.) no facial hair, skirts must be at most 3 inches above the knee (no shorter) and you canot show your underware or bra straps. Now i belive that is a reasonabled dress code. Except for the no hat thing, i have no problem with it. Dress code are put in place for the students benafit, it keeps us from being distracted by Bill Bob's neon blue hair and boxers with smily faces. We can sill express ourselves, but not distract others. I am glad my school has a dress code, and i think most schools should have something similar to it.

I love how the kids saying that "uniforms suk" OBVIOUSLY need to focus more on school and their writing and grammar skills rather than worrying about what they should have to wear.

What gets you further in life?
A) expressing your feelings by what you wear in what should strictly be a learning environment (when you can easily dress however you like from 3 pm til the time you go to bed and on the weekends)
OR
B) going to school in a focused and motivated environment to learn and get ready for your future.

I think B, kids.
Your school isn't putting restrictions on you to be mean or just because they have authority.. It's for your own good, so you can focus and become the best you can be.

Just THINK! When you get out of school and IF you find a decent job afterwards.. Do you honestly think you won't have restrcitions in the workplace?? Well, you will! And you'll have to abide by those rules or else your boss is not going to like you very much, and you will more than likely get fired unless you learn. Why not learn early, like in SCHOOL, where you're suppose to be learning anyway??

-Restaurant Employee(where we have uniforms) and High School Student (where we have a decent and understandable dress code AND teaches us how to spell and write)..no offense.

Ok people let's face it, Teens these days tend to dress quite inappropiately inside or out of school. But that's just trends, you can't stop that. Although uniforms are for jobs and schools. So what are you going to do when you have to wear a uniform then, huh? I'd say the dress code is here for a reason! Everybody here is basically saying the exact same thing as the first comment. I believe in free expression but it does NOT go against the 1st admendment (comment from Jan 15, 2009 12:22 PM). I won't rant on here so you can take this comment or leave it.

I was reading this post, and I thought I would add my opinion...
1) 75% of detentions given out are for Dress Code. If we all had uniforms, that wouldn’t be a problem.
2) Students can “express” themselves through other things, not their trashy tacky clothes. If you want to actually BE SOMEBODY, play an instrument, paint a picture.
3) MAKE SOMETHING OF YOURSELF THAT DOESN’T HAVE THE HOLLISTER TAG ATTACHED TO IT!!
4) The “Higher Beings” on the social ladder tend to shun, and or look down upon those less fortunate, and can’t afford to buy every single item of clothing in Acrombie or Hollister stores.
5) Not everyone is as skinny and incredibly short, to be able to wear those designer skinny jeans.
6) There will ALWAYS be Gangs, whether or not in school or out, there will always be gangs, and there really is nothing we can do to stop that. Clothes don’t really make a difference. They can still have tattoos, hats, or wristbands that indicate they are members of a gang.
7) Uniforms do prevent the opposite sex from getting a high on others clothing. We are here to learn, and get an education, not make booty calls.
8) And so what if you have to change out of the Uniforms every time you get home? I go home and change anyways, because I’ve got a job, and a uniform for that.
9) If students don’t get used to uniforms, they won’t be able to get a business job, because in the real world – yes there is a real world outside of the Juicy Couture department – you wear a Suit, or a business dress. Not a shirt that’s 4 sizes bigger than two people, 3 thousand undershirts, skinny jeans and flats or you’re trippin’ new sneakers.
10) Furthermore, I applaud those who are using PROPER GRAMMAR! Again, this is not AIM, or Yahoo chat. I have noticed that almost all the people who are against uniforms, cannot even spell the simplest words right. (i.e. – what, to, two, too, wear, you, why) Seriously people. Get a grip on your life!!

this country was built on our rights. the right of freedom of speech is intended for people to express there beliefs and clothing is a great way to do that and telling people what slogans are and aren't acceptable is taking that right away from us. if someone wears a shirt that says "don't
snitch" they have the right to say that and the 5th amendment to do that but if you don't like it you shouldn't be able to tell them they can't wear it you should wear a shirt that says snitch for saftey

Why do we all have to suffer? plus uniforms usually require a person's shirt tucked in and pants up to your waist. grose. disturbing. discusting.etc. To all adults who disagree. Most of you i hope have watched some kind of fashion related tv program. What not to wear for example. What do you think they would say? yeah problably would lose their appetite and remember how thankful they are to have a spouse that isn't as goofy as students are. I don't have to wear uniforms. People who think dress code should be banned is crazy. No, they aren't taking away your rights because it only applies to school. ( And isn't it funny how no one cares about learning about the constitution or social studies, but cares when it's actually 'appling' to them ? )Dress code is school rules, just like no using your cellphones during school hours. You can use it all you want until you are in school. No one can judge you by your clothes at all since everyone has the same clothes ! As long as uniform rules aren't so overrated, I think it's fine to wear them. You won't die from not dressing in your normal clothes. I bet that there will be a difference in many schools when students stop worrying about how they look or how others look and focus in their school work. As a student, I witness other students get off topic during class because one girl is wearing short shorts. If everyone wore the same clothes, no one would talk about those in class. People might hate uniforms, but if you actually start to wear them, you wouldn't care that much about it anymore.

For those who are opposed to uniforms on the basis that it violates 1st amendment freedom of speech: The U.S. Supreme Court asserts that minors do not have rights equal with those of adults, and consequently the state (school) could exercise greater control over students than it can over adults. Also in U.S. v. O'Brian the court held that wearing of a particular type or style of clothing is NOT seen as expression of speech in a constitutionally protected sense.

I have many problems with dress codes. First of all a local high school
has banned sweat pants ripped jeans shorts above the knee and capri styled pants. The reason they are banned is because they wish to prepare us for the real world, the last time I checked fitness trainers don't go to work in suits. Not only are these restrictions un practical but they are unfair aswell, the "man" is taking our personalities and destroying our lifes styles. In Washington DC a boy was kicked out of school for promoting the anti war movement.

People have to understand that uniforms and dress codes do not make the person. Also peoples claims for schools being better is might also be false. We just have to know how to dress properly for certain things. Being scared of what someone is wearing is unthinkable for me some people do not have a choice of what they wear. im currently attending lee high in staunton virginia. in my opinion dress codes are one of the most pointless rules crafted by the creative minds of the people we now refer to as 'administrators'. they repress indeviduality, and ive found having had to dress properly for several years previous to entering the public school system, that i am easier attentive and less likely to act out when dressed how i like. i generally wear allot of black make-up tripp pants chains, etc. i even own a straight jacket. skulls snakes finger armor and several piercings also are included in my wardrobe. the way that i dress is how i express who i am. im not strapping chains to myself so that i can tear them off when a teacher upsets me. ive actually been beaten several times, as has my friend who goes to gap, for the way that i dress. my religion is also a major factor however. because of how i dress people instantly infer im satanic or aethiest. i was christian before the beatings and before i realized that christians were full of themselves. i had other christians come up to me and tell me i had to turn my life around. not even following their own preachings and prejudging me turned me away. and after that my life took a major turn. i met an amazing girl. found a great new group of friends and found my place in society. im apprenticing to become a body piercer and tattoo artist and have dedicated myself to my arts and my music. my freedoms of dressing helped me to become who i wanted to be. dress codes should not exist. you can say you should "dress for success", but whose success? ours of course but who decided exactly what success is? having a good high paying job? or being happy with who you are? dress for what you want to do in life and whatever makes you feel the most comfortable while trying to achieve that. i am 15 years old and currently attending my final year of highschool.

School uniforms are a great thing. I wore them in Private School. I hated them at the time, but when I got to high school I had to do more laundry and spend more time deciding what to wear. When you have uniforms your out fit is set and your laundry is reduced. I also want to write that at elementry, and middle school level when your in school it doesn't matter what you wear because your there to learn, not for a contest for whos more hip in their clothes. Thats why at that age you go to the movies and wear what ever the heck they want.

what kind of idiot is noticeably distracted by what others are wearing? "dressing seductively is a great distraction to the opposite sex." yes, because of course everyone knows that teenagers are nothing but raging cesspools of hormones and dirty thoughts. not coming to school because your "cool" pair of pants aren't available? really?

my mind. it's boggling.

also: attacks on grammar and spelling? are they really relevant?

something i liked from another site:

"This is about the communication, not the formality of spelling and grammar... but on the other hand, it makes me feel so powerful and so superior to ridicule others, and it compensates for my otherwise dismal assessment of myself. It's a delicate balance."

Students should be allowed do dress how they want Maybe if they could then the opposite sex wouldn't be so distracted and could actually focus on learning. Seriously, we spend 7 hours at school 5 days a week and we should be able to dress how we want. And when it's hot outside you can't expect students to dress in jeans and hoodys. My mom spends good money on my clothes and I should be able to wear them.

No uniforms is a good idea. But I agree with the dress code, you don't have to dress like a slut for attention. And guys don't need theit butts hanging out of their pants. Its unattractive!! Girls don't have to have their boobs hanging out or really short skirts and shorts to look good. And tanks-tops are for summer ladies not for school. And whats up with the guys wearing t-shirts 10x their size. Did you know you look soo stupid like that?

Notice how everyone who is against uniforms have horrible grammar and spelling, for example "There Selfes," "abl 2 wear wut we wunt 2 cuz it is only fare," and "datz nt fair to them cuz wen..." just to point out a few. Those who are for it seem to at least be mildly educated.

Schools should have a dress code. I am a middle school student and my school has a dress code, no tank tops, no holes above the knee, ect. and i hate it! but its a good reason why they do this. so that the boys in our school aren't paying attention to other areas and things.

lol pplz it doesn't matter how you spell it is completely on whether or not dress codes are any good. my point should be reasonable.
1. set a moderate dress code, not banning too many things but as long as nothing provocative shows.
2. if some1 finds a students outfit offensive and wants to bann it let the student speak out about it and have them write a paper on how this outfit will not get in the way of anything and does not offend anyone.
This should be pretty easy and might work.

I think that the dress code should not be uniforms, but i think that having girls' chest areas hanging out and there butt cheeks barely fiting into their already short shorts...but little did you know that guys barely get into trouble with their clothing, i think that schools should crack down on guys' underwear hanging out of their pants, i am a girl, and yes some guys can pull of the baggy pant idea vary well, but i dont want to see more than half of their boxers....if girls get caught for cleavage and short shorts...guys should have their pants stapled to their shirts then!!!!

school uniforms is making every one like robots are school has talked about it but i dont think there gonna start them at our school but they are making the dress code strickter. like not being able to where holy jeans or tang tops... including flip flops? theres no point in it and i dont like it! i never said i knew it all i just wanted to share my point! im only a middle school student so i dont spell very well but it doesnt mean i dont get a say in it? i think in the beginning of the year we should have a vote and all the teachers get to count for two. then kids in like 6th grade will get to vote because there not use to the type of bevavior like 7th and 8th graders. that way they can choose fairly. but there should be some no duhh ones. im not a good student if you get to kno meh. but still i think my say is important. i just saw this as i was looking for info on a report i have to do for language arts grrrr!

I go to a school that doesn't have uniforms. I like dressing the way i want to dress. But I dont know why everyone thinks uniforms are bad. I mean, i wouldn't mind wearing them. The way you dress doesn't make you who you are, its your character. If you have a great personality then no one will really look at your clothes or your hair. People that freak out about that are insecure because they think they have to impress people by the way they look. That's stupid.

school uniforms should be banned from all schools because when we have our freedom to dress how we like then we can express ourselves and be more comfortable in our own skin, not acting as if you are some fancy shmancy kid. i don't get why it's such a big deal, i get it that dressing seductively gets our imaginations going but there should at least just be a limit on what we can wear. no boxers showing and no cleavage showing. it would make a lot more sense than just banning all clothes except ugly uniforms.

For all of you who feel that your right to express yourself is being taken away. A dress code provides equality to the students who cannot afford designer clothes. School is not there to provide you with a place to show off your fashion sense. It is there to provide you with an education and prepare you for life. Every job that one of you non-spelling wannabe fashion models will be able to obtain will require you to were a uniform. Try telling your boss at the local drive-thru that he's taking away your right to express yourself and see how long you last. Go to school to learn and stop worrying about what you look like. I'm pretty sure Bill Gates didn't give a rats rear-end what he looked like in school and he's doing just fine.

• One reason, of many, is Safety of the Students. For example: During a natural disaster Earthquake, Tornado, etc, how would a Parent I.D. their child? By the clothes that they were wearing, when they left home. What if a senior decided to attack a 9th -or- 10th grade student? How would the victim describe the attacker? Let's see, Khaki Pants - Navy Blue Shirt - Brown Shoes. You get the picture. This was, is, and will ALWAYS BE a VERY BAD idea.

• I THINK THAT DRESS CODES SHOULD BE BANNED FOR LIFE BECAUSE PEOPLE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO EXPRESS THERE SELFES BY WHAT THE WEAR IF THEY DONT EXPRESS THERE SELVES THEY WONT HAVE SELF CONFIDENCE

• They should be gone forever! Their lame and pointless and when you don’t get to dress the way you want your not showing how you feel and your personal style!

• It would be gross to wear the same uniform every day; you don’t get the chance to wash your clothes every day. Even if you did wash your uniform everyday it wasting energy and raise your water bill.

• Self-expression is an important part of child development and some experts believe that curbing it with uniforms can be detrimental to a child.

• Experts believe that children need to feel comfortable in order to maximize learning. Uniforms reduce one’s ability to choose clothing that fits individual comfort needs.

• If you have to wear a skirt in cold weather you would be cold because you are not allowed to wear track pants or jeans.

I kind of agree with some of the people who are saying others should pay attention to their English classes. But i do not think people are typing like that because they aren't paying attention or anything to do with the clothes you wear - that's absurd. I think they're typing like that because we text, and I know it was kind of difficult at first for me to kee switching back and forth from texting to typing, but I got it. so for all the people who are writing - at least TRY to type normally so the people who don't know how to read our text lingo can understand what we're saying =p

I think that the schools overexagerate on what kids like me would wear to school. They probably saw a show that had students dressing that way. It makes me mad because they are sterotyping students. I'm a 13 year old middle school student and I could care less what people think about me. I think they should allow students to wear whatever they want to a certain extent. When I was in the sixth grade I moved to a school with dress code. I think dress code is okay but I would really like to wear what I want like what I'm doing in my new school!!! Wearing what you want is actually a great way to express your freedom. I'm actually pretty smart and I don't think that anyone in my old school would wear anything bad to school.

Peace :)

How about we show creativity and individualism through our school projects: essays, art,and school work, they way we treat others and ourselves, instead of through our clothing. Just a thought! I honestly think that all schools should have uniforms. If they dont then children will be made fun of and teased because they are not wearing "name brands." I am a 14 year old girl and I wear all the name brands, but DO NOT TREAT OTHERS DIFFERENTLY! It is wrong and immature. Uniforms would make us students more focused on our educations and not as much on what we are wearing or how "cool" we look. In my high school, Theres a group of "gangsters" and all they wear is baggy pants and show off the blood and crip signs. They are breaking the dress code. It states "absolutly no sagging." They should be given a belt and if they dont wear it, they are sent home! Girls wear revealing shirts and really short skirts/shorts. They should be made to wear their gym shorts! Its against the rules and they know that. Read, Follow, Have a good future. Thats my motto.

For the three people who made the last comments, once you learn to write then maybe i will listen to your points. A certain amount of conformity needs to be learnt in life, and the best time to tecah that is during school. You have your whole lives and after school/weekends to express who you are and be what you want to be, but why you are at school then you need to be a part of it. School will be over before you know it and after a year or so, you'll look back and not even remember anything about the uniform. You'll have better memories to think about (like recess and lunch with your mates and getting up to mischief!) I like the idea of uniforms in school, i didn't when i was there, but now i look back and realise it's not such a bad thing, and people don't get judged as easily if you're all dressed the same, kids are harsh enough as it is!

Hi i am a high schooler and personally thinkg that dress codes are stupid it does not affect wehat you talk abdout or how u get get talked about it is just the clothes you wear. Half the kids in my school that get made fun of is not because of what they wear it is because how they act or how they are just as a person. I can see the one thing about dress codes is that so students cant concentrate in class because girls can wear some pretty loose clotheing that reveals a lot of body parts but if they want to dress like that then go ahead a and let them they are just expressing their feelings and the real person they are inside.

Okay, all you that are pointing out that spelling and grammatically errors are showing the lack in education for those that don't want a dress code are being extremely ignorant. Many shorten words and other things to make things easier. If you're going to criticize those for making mistakes, maybe you yourself has to grow up...

I personally think that Dress Codes are ridiculous and it should be upon the student to decide how they want to physically appear to others in a social environment. Uniforms and other required things that must be worn in a school is un-necessary due to the fact that we are in a FREE COUNTRY, and it is not the schools fault if someone appears to be "slutty" or appear "whoreish".

In conclusion, I say that all students should be given the responsibility to choose what they wear and take the risk of either getting criticized or made fun of for what they wear.

Thank you, and stop being so ignorant!

I went k-12th grade without wearing a uniform. I was not a well off student, i wore non-name brand hand me downs. Sometimes i was pointed at and talked about for the kind of clothing i would wear, while all the other students were wearing newer, in style, some name brands...things i just could not afford. I believe it had a tiny affect on my academics. I believe it played a part in why i didn't feel so accepted. I also think if we had uniforms at my school, then i would not have been much different.
Other students still would have noticed that I couldn't pay for things that they could. Lunch, field trip money, book funds, snack day, t shirt sales,..... even if we were all dressed alike, they still would have known that i had a smaller amount than they did.
We need to teach kids at the start to treat each other better. whether in a uniform or not, the students can be shown that the amount of money u have in ur family, doesnt count for what happens in the future.

If you need clothing to express your individuality you are not individual. Your "free spirit" is displayed by your quality and ideas as a person. Schools should promote the use of fine uniforms to avoid all the conflict individual's clothes tend to bring about. Besides, a boy should learn to tie a tie and a lady should not have to exploit herself through shanty clothes for popularity.

OK, i go to a private school now. i hate the dress code. when i went to public school, i could wear comfortable clothes. i would only have to dress up for important occasions. now i have to dress up everyday. i had to waste money to buy new clothes. i spent over $1,000 dollars on new clothes just for school. and ill probably grow out of them by next year. i believe that we should wear what we want, but appropriately. like nice jeans, or nice shorts. like basketball shorts and a nice t shirt. i dont want to wear a polo and dress pants for the rest of my life. its boring!!!

OK, to me, I don't like the dress code. My school has to wear polo's and nice dress pants.. everyday. I would like a little freedom. And I have noticed something else too, maybe it is a good thing we have a dress code because i was reading these comments and all of the kids who don't have a dress code have bad spelling grammar. It's spelled grammAR, not grammER! I have also seen it the other way around too, but not half as much. And for anyone that says," That's gay." Never ever say that. I'm not a gay person myself, but that is offensive to the gay community, because when you say that's gay, your meaning that's stupid. So your referring gay as to stupid. The gay community is not stupid, it's a lifestyle they have chosen.

Hey my school doesn't have uniforms, but they're considering it...and I'm against it because I'm in middle school, and clothes are a BIG part of my life...and it'd be a waist of money only being able to wear my clothes (I like) on Saturday and Sunday...and soooo many people are suffering from the economy, and unifrom woukd just be another think some people can't afford currently! WHO AGREES???? :) Kels (7th grade)

1st of all i would like 2 say that people like 2 use shortened and slang words when they're on the computer 2 type faster or they just like it, ok? Is that ok w/ ya'll? Or do we all have 2 type perfectly? Ok sorry anyway, i think we shouldn't have uniforms and that dress codes should be more reasonable. Yeah, yeah dresscodes r good 4 us u say, but really the clothes don't change our behavior or grades ok, and we like wearing what we r comfortable and confident in. i do agree that there should be SOME dresscode, ya know, no super short shorts, saggy pants (i absolutely HATE those), reveiling tops, and stuff like that, but not all this 2 different colors of shirts, 3 different kinds of pants, and, all that, times have been hard recently and it is sooooo much easier not having to buy extra special clothes just for school that we don't WANT to wear anywhere else. i do understand SOME of the reasons 4 dresscodes and uniforms, but i think if the students had more say in what they wore they would do better in school cuz they wouldn't be whining about the dress codes all the time.
8th grader that can spell but WANTS to use slang and doesn't like dresscodes. there, that 'bout sums it all up. :]

this article is wrong! it says that with uniforms you cant tell who has more money and thats not true. hwat about american eagle, hollister, abercrombie, and ralph lauren? who make clothes in uniform colors. . .that would indicate that not everybody can afford these brands.

One reason to have school uniforms is the debated subject of judging a student by what he or she wears. As a result of school uniforms not being present is that students judge other students by what brand they wear, what logo they wear, and where they got the clothing. School uniforms suggest since no one will be focused on clothes that the students will be more focused on the other student’s personality and who they are rather then what they wear. All students will be treated the same while wearing uniforms. School is also not an acceptable location to express one’s self based on their clothing. School prepares students for a working environment that requires some sort of uniform or strict dress code. School is designed to better a student’s education and prepare them for the adult world. Allowing them to dress the way they want will not teach them how to look presentable when applying for a job or for proper image depending on the occupation.

Oh, and guest from May 13 at 8:14 AM... you spelled "grammar" wrong.

^^from guest on Mayb 15th.!

HAHAHAHAHAHAH that's funny.

But truthfully, we SHOULD NOT have a dress code at all, because okay we are supposedly "free to express ourselves" but we are TOLD by teachers and administrators what we can and can't wear?! That's just stupid and messed up. EVERYONE should be able to wear whatever they want and express themselves. Teachers act like SOME girls don't dress like sluts and the whole sagging pants thing, well that's just how it is. They just have to deal with it. I'd rather see a guys' boxers than his butt. So why should it matter so much anyways? Mainly everyone violates the dress code anyways, so what's the point?

I think we should be able to wear whatever we want within reason because tanktops are not seductive and neither are sleeveless shirts when guys look at you the least thing they're imagining is your shoulders and back. I can see short short skirts and shirts that are too revealing but not anything else.

I think there should be no dress codes for school because it doesn`t let you express yourself so people know what kind of a person you are

I think that uniformes should be band, They are violating the 1st amendment. Freedom of expression. You should wear what you want. Read about the 1st ammendment. Your disreguarding the constitution. -8th grader.

I think that what they are doing is wrong we as Students live in a free country that we should have the right to where what we choose its wrong to take away who we are. Kinda like my school they let us where Hat's and alot of other stuff but starting next week they are taking hat's away from our Students. I feel do that is a crime it is so not fair because last year and all the years before that got to where their hat's to school and now out of now where they want to take them away. So No i don't like this Article and i will stand for my student rights i will wear what i choose to where what we want i will fight for what is right and if i get kicked out of school i will just Sue the school for not putting the no hat's rule in the dress code. Witch by the way is alegal!

dress codes and uniforms are there to help students in the long run. Having everyone wear what they want has removed the unity and focus on education at schools. Everyone is their own individual and there is no sense of school pride or togetherness. If we wore uniforms, people would get over themselves and focus on the real reason we go to school.

There are negative and postive effects for wearing dress codes. It helps students focus, but it also doesn't express yourself. I think they should do one month with dress codes, the next none.

I go to a public school, and we do not have uniforms. They are not needed. Students should be allowed to wear whatever they please. They are expesssing themselves by the way they dress. Uniforms are not even pretty, they definintly are not giving you any style. [:

uniforms/ dress codes are dumb. if girls want to wear mini skirts and guys sag there pants let them. why does it matter to you what other people wear? if you don't like it, don't look at it. it's our money, we're paying for it. i shouldnt have to pay for uniforms and be forced to wear something that i don't want in the first place.and anyone who ever said that it's preparing you for a job, just stop. we're at school, not at work.

Yeah I totally understand with the self expression stuff, but I feel so uncomfortable when I am walking down the halls and girls are wearing these sick outfits because they aren't comfortable with themselves. Then guys wearing there pants so baggy to get attention and who knows what else.
It just makes me upset.

Although the other teenagers don't agree with them. I think that the dress codes are an ingenious idea. Kids are cruel, its the way it is. As for uniforms, sure, they may seem abit strange at first, but, as we all know, they /DO/ help with morality. This allows people to be equals. It allows the other kids, who "don't have cool clothes" to be accepted for who they are, not what they are. Kudos to the writer.

Kids have the right to express themselves and dress how they want to dress. its there body and their clothes, so i disagree about this article. Kids can be depressed from not being a loud to dress how they want. Wouldnt u rather kids dress how they want than cut theirselves.

Students should be able to choose freely what they would like to wear. If a student dosent want to pay attention, they're not going to pay attention. That is they're problem, students how are smart enough to wear what they want and do they're school work should not be penalized.

I think that some students do overreact to their dress codes. Think about it rationally. You shouldn't be exposing yourself because it shows a lack of self-respect. Clothing that glorifies poor lifestyles shouldn't be allowed in schools. Although, I don't completely agree with uniforms. I do believe that they can make getting dressed in the morning less of a burden (and if you already know what to wear in the morning, you can sleep in a little later). I also think that there isn't enough evidence to support the belief that uniforms reduce violence and increase academic performance. Until there is proper, unbiased research done to prove this, I cannot completely support uniforms. And as for the people who make all these errors with grammar, I believe that this is more of a lifestyle choice and less of a lack of focus and education (but I do find most of it difficult to read and slightly annoying). Oh yeah, I'm 13, almost 14.

Before anyone posts a comment on here, please check you're spelling. People will take you more seriously if you spell the word "Middle" right. Honestly, the whole article is about trying to get kids minds off of things other than their education at school. If you can't stop staring at some chick's butt during spelling class then maybe we do need uniforms. I don't like the idea either. I am in high school, my freshman year, and I do not like the idea of restricting our freedom of expression. It's in the Constitution and we are citizens, just minor ones. It kids are the future, then we should be treated with all of our rights now.

No school uniforms. But some restictions. Like: No booty shorts. No half shirts (must be down to the beginning of your bottoms) Skirts at your fingertips. Shirts at your finger tips too, for those of you who like to wear them long and baggy. As for the baggy pants on guys, I think their should be some restrictions. Would you honestly want someone hiding a gun, knife, bomb, ect. in their pants? If you said "Idk" then what if they came after you first? Don't deny the fact that it could happen. It is possible.

I don't think the "Don't Snitch" shirts are a problem. If someone hears about a bomb, they are going to tell. There are anonmous tip lines available and you can call them for no charge anytime. Save a life, maybe even your own, and tell if you know there will be an attack on your school.

Grow up. Learn to spell. Andd if you're too distracted, then move so you can pay attention and keep schools uniform-free.

Freshman.
