Encouraging Success in Your Child's EducationTips for Making Sure Your Child Does Well in School
From an early age, children need to be encouraged to develop positive habits and attitudes that will aid in continued academic development throughout their lives.
It is important that parents encourage academic excellence in a child from an early age. A child as young as three is old enough to start dreaming about his future vocation. Parents who encourage a child to dream of careers in medicine, philosophy, education, and psychology, among other, are laying the foundation for their child’s academic achievement. Using patience, planning and organization, parents will give their children the parameters needed for them feel good in their academic accomplishments. Routine Study TimeSetting and sticking to routines are important for children. Parents should schedule specific times every day dedicated to homework and study. No other activity should be allowed to interrupt this time. Children should not be allowed to negotiate this time. Homework time should be an enjoyable time for children. Make up a song to start and end homework time. Parents who sit with their children and help them with their schoolwork are showing an active interest in their child’s learning. These parents should be enthusiastic about homework time. When a child sees how important her education is to her parent, she will begin to take more interest in how she is doing in school. Praise ResultsChildren thrive when they are praised. Parents should encourage their child’s focus in school by praising the achievement milestones reached by that child. Hugs should be given when the student bring home an A. Projects that win awards should be rewarded by an ice cream cone or a favorite dinner. When children here their parents telling others about their achievements they gain a sense of pride in a job well done. Praising a child will encourage him to continue to endeavor to do his best in school. Teach OrganizationChildren need to be taught organization. Parents should purchase a folders or binders for children to put schoolwork and homework in. Time should be taken to help the child organize her folder. Folders and binders should be checked often to ensure that they stay neat and organized. Parents should ask teachers for a copy of upcoming assignments to be kept at home. An assignment book should be given to the student. This book should be checked daily by parents. Children should be taught the importance of finishing an assignment when it is assigned—not an hour before it is due. Parents who take the time to teach their children the importance of organization are laying a foundation that will follow them through college and beyond. Test for DisabilitiesParents should be aware of the possibility that their child may have a learning disability. Being aware of the learning difficulties that face a child allows parents and educators to create plans that enable to child to learn. Parents should work with their child’s teacher and school to get testing if learning difficulties are notices. If a disability is discovered, parents should find a positive way to present it to the child. The child should never feel as if he is less intelligent because of this difficulty. Parents should also have their child’s eyes tested yearly to make sure that he is seeing correctly. Parent Teacher CommunicationParents should communicate regularly with their child’s teacher. It is important that parents listen to what the teacher is telling them. This is the individual who is in the classroom with the child during school hours and he may have observations about the child that are not perceptible to the parent. The teacher should be asked how the child behaves in class. Parents who feel their child is being distracted by students around her should ask for the child to be moved to another part of the room. Parents should request regular updates on their child’s grades. This will allow the parents to be aware of any problem areas their child may have. Brain FoodChildren who are fed good, nutritious meals perform better in school. Children should not be allowed to go to school without breakfast. Very little sugar should be part of the student’s diet. Provide fruits and vegetables for snacks instead of chips and cookies. The importance of high academic achievement becomes more apparent to a child whose parents spend time studying with and encouraging him in his academic pursuits. As the child sees his parents and teacher working together for his academic success he will get a sense of what he is capable of.
