A lot of kids won't be getting the usual school supplies in the fall, not with so many parents still looking for work. High school graduates can help local children.

A lot of parents across the U.S. are still without jobs, so it stands to reason that many kids won't be getting the usual amount of school supplies in the fall. Teachers who usually spend personal funds to buy classroom items probably won't be able to buy as much, either. Many department stores have already started lowering prices on school items. Some states offer tax-free holidays where parents can purchase specific school items without paying sales tax. But discounts and no taxes won't help when there is no money in the household budget for school supplies.

Acts of Kindness From Former Graduates Can Help School Children

Former high school graduates can assist younger kids in the community by helping to purchase school supply items. Many seniors that graduated in the spring are just beginning to feel the sadness that comes with not being able to participate in the annual school supply shopping trip. School supplies are cheap just before the doors open in the fall. Why not grab a few items to ease the longing to shop and make a few kids happy at the same time?

Some towns and cities have programs to collect school supplies for needy kids. United Way of Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, in Florida, for example, hosts the annual Cram the Van school supply drive to collect donations from the public. Barrels are placed in participating stores to collect supplies for school. Unfortunately, many personal budgets won't be able to handle the donations as usual.

High School Graduates Can Make a Difference for Local Kids in School

Remember that favorite grade school teacher or middle school class that meant so much? What better way is there to show appreciation than to pick up some school supplies for the new students? Check the prices at local department stores; some places are selling spiral notebooks and folders for 10 cents each, and consumers can buy many popular items by the case. A little cash can buy a lot of supplies during back-to-school savings events.

Students who have graduated high school need only grab a supply list and join the fun. Don't forget; many classes need housekeeping supplies such as paper towels, tissues, antibacterial soap, and other items that are in short supply at school during the year. Drop donated items off at the school when the teachers return. One can bet the staff will be delighted to accept donations of housekeeping items and school supplies.

School children should not miss out on activities and assignments because they lack the proper work tools. Parents unable to find jobs during hard times may be unable to afford school supplies. High school graduates can make a difference and help the youth in the community by purchasing school items and dropping off donated supplies at a local school. A few dollars will buy a lot of school supplies during back-to-school sales, and older "students" won't miss out on the fun of school shopping.
