How Can I Improve My Grades at School?

Ways to Get a Better Grade in Middle/High School or in College

Dec 29, 2008 Mia Carter

Find out how to get higher grades on tests, exams, class projects and on homework assignments, and improve grades on report cards in school or at university.

"How can I get higher grades?" and "How can I improve my child's grades?" are two very common questions that arise among students and their parents. The grades that a student earns in school on tests, projects, class presentations and on homework are all combined to determine the student's final grade in the class or college course.

Why Is It Important to Improve My Grades in School?

Getting better grades in school should be a primary focus of elementary, middle and high school students, as grades will largely determine the young person's future.

Grades in school and on standardized tests like the SAT and ACT will largely determine if a student gets accepted to a particular private school, college or university.

A student's grades will also determine whether he or she is eligible to receive academic scholarships, which may make or break a student's chances of attending a university or college. And a person's education will play a large role when it comes to career options, future earning potential and lifestyle as an adult.

There are several very effective ways to improve grades, whether the student is attending middle school or college.

Consider the following methods to get better grades.

Improve Grades in School By Keeping an Assignment Book or Student Planner

Students should maintain an assignment book or student planner to record homework assignments, write down assignment due dates and to note dates for tests, exams and quizzes.

Keeping an assignment book or planner helps students keep track of important due dates and deadlines, which helps to avoid forgetting about an assignment or handing it in late, which can result in lower grades.

Get Higher Grades by Taking Notes in Class

Instead of daydreaming or sleeping during class, take notes. The key to taking notes during class is to put the notes in your own words.

Many teachers and professors write class notes on the board for students to copy word for word. But copying these class notes word-for-word does not promote comprehension of the material. When the student writes notes in his/her own words, this requires one to think about and comprehend the material in an interactive way.

Take Reading Notes to Improve Reading Comprehension

When reading textbooks or other books for a class or college course, don't just highlight important passages. In addition to highlighting key information or passages, students should take reading notes by re-phrasing the key phrases or passages in their own words.

Copying notes or information word-for-word does not promote comprehension of the reading material, whereas students who re-word the information in their own way are more likely to process and recall the information. Reading notes are also helpful when it comes to studying for exams, tests or writing papers based on the textbook or class readings. Instead of having to re-read entire textbook chapters or entire books, students can refer to their notes.

Keep Lines of Communication Open With College Professors and Teachers

It's very important to communicate with your teacher or professor. If a student is having a difficult time understanding the class material, speak with the professor or teacher after class or during office hours.

Educators are virtually always willing to provide extra help to students and in cases where this is not possible, the teacher can refer a student to a study group or tutor. Seeking guidance from the teacher or professor also shows that the student is making an effort, which may mean a better grade in the class, particularly if the student's grade is right on the border of two grades.

Communication with a professor or teacher is also important when it comes to assignments, projects and homework. If there is a legitimate reason why a student must hand in an assignment past the due date, communicate this to the teacher or professor. He or she will typically be willing to work with you if they're notified in advance (i.e. not two days before a 20-page paper is due), whereas if a student simply fails to turn in an assignment on time, the teacher may simply assume that the student is lazy, careless or unorganized.

Getting better grades is actually fairly simple when students approach their classes with the right attitude and the right techniques to promote comprehension of the class material and readings.

To add to the article, don't just memorize. Actually learn the classes. I'm in several honors level science and math classes this semester, and knowing where formulas come from, not just what they are make the classes way easier.
