The goal of education is to produce successful and productive adults in the work place after graduation from high school. Unfortunately, many students become drop outs for various reasons. Boredom and irrelevance to the real world are only two. How can schools correct this trend?
Southern Indiana teachers are getting involved in student success after graduation. They are spending the day visiting manufacturers to see what skills students need to be successful in the world of work. The fact is that not all students are college-bound. Some will attend a 4-year college, some a technical school and some will go directly into the world of work. School counselors are overwhelmed and usually focus on the college-bound. Teachers are filling in the gap.
Businesses want to hire qualified individuals but they are not receiving qualified applicants. Business wants teachers to learn more about the math, reading and other skills that are needed in the business world. Some businesses are grabbing talented students while still in high school to ensure qualified applicants. It is hoped that working closely with the schools will enable businesses to create the work force they need.
