Cell Phone Law Suit

Parent Side

Anemona Hartocollis of the New York Times reports that parents claim that the phones are needed for safety. Students travel on subways and buses and often pick up younger siblings. They need the phones.

School Side

School administrators claim that students are using the cell phones for drug deals, taking pictures in locker rooms, harassment, cheating on tests, and calling friends during class time. There is really no reason to use a telephone during class time.

How Many Phones Are There?

Schools have begun to randomly screen students entering school with X-ray scans. In a very short time, schools confiscated 3,233 cellphones in 20 schools. Other items to surface were 38 weapons, a heavy slab of iron, 250 iPods and 783 devices like beepers, DVD players, etc.

Attorneys representing the parents claim this is a civil rights issue. Is it a civil right of a student to use a cell phone during class time? That will remain to be seen.
