Childhood Obesity and School

To say that parents were surprised is an understatement. Many were outraged. Who's Idea Was This? Gov. Mike Huckabee began having health problems and lost 105 pounds. He was concerned about the overall health of Arkansas residents, especially school children. The legislature thought this idea might work. California, Florida and Pennsylvania now have similar programs. There is a national movement for nutrition awareness. Many schools have removed_soft_drink and junk food snack machines in an effort to promote healthy eating. Other schools are eliminating pre-packaged food in the hot lunch program and are trying organic foods. Some schools are experimenting with giving students more movement in the classrooms. While this is going on, there is a trend to cut activity by scaling down on recess to the point where many are saying that recess is becoming obsolete. Formula Not Always Correct Kim Cobb of the Houston Chronicle writes that a 6-foot-4 football player who weighs 230 pounds was on the "fat list." He is fit and would not be considered obese by most. However, the BMI formula labeled him as obese. Results? The obesity rate among school children has not increased in Arkansas but it has not declined, either. The program began in the 2003-04 school year and has increased public awareness. Many families are planning meals differently and cutting down on sweets. Some children are trying to get more exercise and activity. Overall, it is unknown if the program is actually working to reduce the obesity problem.
