Since 2001
David Freeman, who holds a degree in biology and anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, created an interactive website that he could update from his satellite phone. With the assistance of private grants, Freeman goes on adventures to remote places and takes students with him.
Free to Schools
Schools can sign up at no charge by visiting The Wilderness Classroom Organization's Web page, www.wildernessclassroom.com/index.html. Children can experience daily video clips and talk to Freeman every week in a live chat room.
Lesson Plans
Prior to going on a new adventure, Freeman distributes lesson guides to schools enrolled in the program. To get students participating actively, Freeman posts a "daiy dilemma" on his site. Students are asked to solve problems he may encounter in his adventure that day.
School Visits
Freeman will also visit schools with personal appearances but there is a charge for the assemblies. He will meet with students before and after his programs.
Student Input
Not only are students allowed to communicate with Freeman and ask questions, they also get to participate in online voting on future adventures. Joseph Ruzich of the Chicago Tribune quotes Freeman, "This program is designed to get students excited about learning. We want the program to motivate students, especially those who aren't motivated from textbooks."
