Legal Battle in Omaha, NE

I turned on my television the other morning to see a city quite near to me in the middle of a heated argument on Fox News. Since we don't see too much local controversy, I was very interested. The Nebraska legislature proposed and had signed new school boundaries into law. It is now law to redraw district lines by race:

  • Black
  • Hispanic
  • White

At first my initial reaction was one of "You've got to be kidding!" But, after listening, I see the logic and it does make sense.

It all began with a tax levy and boundary dispute. Just follow the money trail, right? It ended with the legislature solving it.

Chambers: "Changes Nothing"

Senator Ernie Chambers proclaimed that this will change nothing in who attends what schools. He claims that Omaha is already segregated into neighborhood schools by race. What this new plan would change is who has power over the money. Parents would have more control and possibly future choices.

More Power

Right now, the minorities have little say in what goes on in the schools their children attend. By changing the district lines, the Hispanic parents would have a say in the school their children attend. The black parents would have a say in the school their children attend. And the whites would have a say in their children's schools like they always have.

Chambers is probably right. It is giving power to the people. The NAACP doesn't want that? Hmmmm.
