Research
Two researchers have discovered some disturbing data.
After analyzing test results of over 9000 boys who started kindergarten since 1998, they found that kindergarten teachers perceived shorter boys to be less skilled in reading, math and general knowledge than their test scores indicated.
Concerns
Smith and Niehmi are very troubled by this trend. In spite of scores showing that the smaller boys are capable, teachers' perception is that they are less capable. Are smaller boys being placed in remedial classes they don't need? Can this lead to a lower self-image and discourage smaller boys in future years?
The report is in the July/August issue of the Journal of Educational Research. [Debra Viadero, Education Week, edweek.org, September 4, 2007]
